State funds answers to Marietta church boiler explosion
State investigators cited two mechanical malfunctions in the First Baptist Church boiler explosion that killed five. A too small pressure relief pipe and a malfunctioning high limit control allowed overheating. The one inch pop-off valve was adequate, but its connecting line was half inch. The janitor shut off circulating parts, potentially raising temperature. The education building boiler was never registered. Mayor said local inspector checked the boiler room but was not boiler expert. Fire Marshal also investigates.
