Yearly Bridge Inspection Planned in Ohio
Ohio will inspect every bridge annually using a new manual by the Ohio Department of Highways. Highway Director P. E. Masheter says the guide covers all bridges 10 feet or more and defines responsibilities and inspection frequency. The plan follows the Silver Bridge collapse near Gallipolis with 46 deaths last December. Masheter notes Ohio is the first state to publish such guidelines and that inspections are intensified after any event that could weaken a bridge. The state oversees bridges on the state system and those connecting to other states. Ohio owns three Ohio River bridges at Steubenville, East Liverpool, and Pomeroy. Meanwhile bids open Tuesday for an interchange and approach system for the new Kanauga bridge across the Ohio River, with automated embankment work and a $12 million price tag for the bridge. Completion and traffic for the new span are anticipated in 1969 with full interstate access planned nearby.
