Detroit Tigers left handed pitcher Art Houtteman, 23, the first baseball name drafted since the Korean War outbreak, entered the Army today after a brief honeymoon. He arrived at Fort Wayne in Detroit at 8 a.m. and told reporters he dislikes the publicity and wants to be seen as Joe Doakes, not a celebrity.
A language firm, the Linguaphone Institute of America, declared Brooklyn tops a "sloppy speech" derby singling out Ypsilanti, Atlanta, Chicago, and Hollywood as high on the list. City leaders pushed back with quips about speech patterns and pride in local speech, while defenders noted regional variation and public misperception.

World War II veteran and airlines executive Erle Cocke Jr., 29, of Dawson Georgia was elected national commander of the American Legion by acclamation at the four day convention in Los Angeles. Delegates backed universal military training and the Legion’s preparedness program, urging a reconstituted State Department to combat Communism while calling for belt tightening and reduced civilian spending.
Alger Hiss, former State Department official, appealed to the U S Court of Appeals in New York seeking freedom from his perjury conviction and five year sentence. He has lived on ten thousand dollar bail since his January guilty finding of denying passing secrets to a pre war Soviet spy ring. The three judge panel heard the case with Assistant U S Attorney Clarke Ryan handling the prosecution after Thomas F Murphy resigned to become New York City police commissioner.
Tokyo AP reports 37 warships bombarded Red Korean supply lines from Soviet Siberia as South Korean ground forces and Allied planes hit coastal targets. Navy bombardment led by Missouri moved along a 130 mile eastern front with 800000 pounds of shells in Chongjin. Allied forces pressed toward Pyongyang amid heavy resistance as Red divisions rushed to Kumchon.
In Savannah Georgia AP reports seventeen Negro laborers from Reynolds and Manley Lumber Company were shot and wounded while traveling to their plant amid a labor dispute. The incident underscores escalating tensions at the workplace in a contested labor environment.
Washington AP Sective Service Director Lew B Hershey proposed lowering the draft age to 18 arguing 18 to 26 year olds would supply a large manpower pool for the armed services His estimate cites about 10 million youths in that bracket and notes current rules bar induction until age 19 Veterans with 90 days service in the war period are exempt with additional deferments for sea service He suggested Congress may face the issue and warned World War II veterans would be wholly exempted if 18 year olds could be drafted
Washington AP reports military high command seeks 2,100,000 armed personnel, 62 air groups and Navy ships by next June. Gen Omar Bradley announced the plan in a recorded broadcast. Brady noted the rising cost and effort required and said a fuller program will be sent to President Truman and Congress when ready.
