California ashes scattering by air grows in practice
In California a growing number of undertakers scatter cremated remains at sea under a 1960 law. Mike Reed, one of 13 providers, says his business now averages five scatterings monthly, with the state reporting about 360 per month. He flies about three miles off Santa Monica, releases ashes from a brown paper bag, and notes the law limits operations to the water. Premium plane rental adds 25 dollars. no aerial service is offered beyond the act.
