The True Mahogany Tale From the New World
True mahogany trees grow in the New World with trunks up to 80 to 100 feet. Raleigh’s ship repairs used Caribbean timber, then British sailors carried logs back as ballast. Cabinetmaker Wollaston finally crafted a candy box and a bureau from the logs, pleasing many and inspiring further furniture.
