Controversy Over School Busing Remains Heated After Five Years
The Associated Press surveys five years after busing began in Berkeley and other cities. In Berkeley all pupils ride buses with grades K to 3 in white Hill Districts and 4 to 6 in black river-area neighborhoods, then attend same junior and senior highs. Opposition comes from white clergy Alan Walbridge who started a protest school and argues compensatory education lowers standards. Some Black families also oppose one way busing to white schools.
