President Truman's order to begin drafting doctors and dentists is expected to trigger a rush to enlistment offices. Those who volunteer before being drafted will earn $100 more per month than those drafted. Registration starts October 16 for nearly all doctors dentists and veterinarians under 50 not in reserve. Induction numbers depend on military needs with thousands likely.
A 23 year old convict named Roger Preyer evaded a two state dragnet after escaping from an Ohio penitentiary transport. He slipped from officers near a police station in Cincinnati and surrendered without resistance after being identified. He had previously fled from Kenton and rode a stolen car to Lima then a boxcar to Cincinnati. He faces charges for purse snatching and his escape is under Cincinnati police inquiry.
New York graft probes sought grand jury testimony from three top police officials and a prominent figure likely former mayor William O Dwyer. Investigations followed raids on eight police homes linked to bookmaker Harry Gross as part of a massive gambling empire.
Riverhead New York AP report: Charles J Walter wealthy sugar broker of Huntington Long Island died May 13 at 82. His will filed shows 5000 to defray expenses of a gathering of his friends six months after his decease, the date to be November 13.

Chicago based Senate Crime Committee questions former Capone ally Paul Ricca on an 80 000 loan and 350 000 parole spending since 1947. Kefauver calls Ricca testimony unsatisfactory and describes the loans as fishy while the inquiry into Chicago underworld continues.
In Lakeland Georgia an elderly farmer W C Royals and accomplice Sam Phillips were jailed on murder warrants for slugging and burning two infants Cleon Browning four and Martha two. Ernest Browning father of the children and son in law of Royals swore the warrants. The children died September 28 as the car they were in allegedly caught fire after Royals and Phillips left briefly.
An Atlanta excavation for a department store annex collapsed, burying eight others and killing four workers T. J. Culpepper his father T. W. Culpepper D. D. Vickers and Zannie Weaver. O. H. Gilbreath and John Ward survived after rescue efforts.
Tokyo AP reports the U S First Cavalry Division captured Kaesong two miles south of parallel 38 on the road toward Pyongyang. The unit has wheeled nearly 200 miles since mid September as it advances toward the Red capital.
UN troops poised at the 38th parallel move into North Korea to unify the country as General Assembly readiness for the peace plan grows. Cavalry divisions push toward Kaesong and Wonsan as ROK forces reach near the east coast and Pak forces reinforce defense lines along the Imjin corridor.

Cpl Levi Jackson Jr a heavyweight boxing champion and medical aid man with the 25th Infantry near Haman Korea died August 13 while rescuing wounded under North Korean fire. He had held 16 division and Army titles and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for shielding others as mortar fire raked the hill.
