President Nixon says secret Vietnam negotiations are in a sensitive state and he will not forecast if or when a peace agreement might be reached before Election Day. He insists he cannot predict whether the talks will succeed or not.
Reports from Paris and Saigon show no breakthrough in behind the scenes efforts to end the Indochina war. Xuan Thuy says both sides remain far apart on military and political questions. Kissinger and Haig held meetings with South Vietnamese leaders to press discussions.
In Columbus petition drives race to submit signatures to repeal state income taxes. Secretary of State Ted Brown sets a 10 day deadline after many names were ruled invalid. Meanwhile fighting in Vietnam erupts along Highway 13 with B52 raids and casualties near Saigon as U S forces respond before the upcoming election. Cambodian fighting blocks Highway 5 as reinforcements are cut off behind enemy bridges.
The Senate advances an 18.5 billion social security welfare bill with numerous new benefits and higher taxes. The measure stalls welfare reform and family program changes, prompting debate over scope and fiscal impact.
Phillip Stewart, 23, pleads not guilty to assault and battery over an incident in a department store. Diana Watson, 21, alleges Stewart grabbed and kissed her hand after asking to smell perfume. Police were called Wednesday.
Reports say two U S Army armed guards and a cleaning woman were shot to death early by AWOL soldier Ger man police say. The victims were on the Copenhagen to Rome Express near Northeim when bodies were found after the train stopped in Goettingen. The gunman, identified as Thomas De Gregorio of Hialeah Florida, fled as authorities hunted him. The incident occurred amid a wider Senate action approving a large Social Security and welfare bill after a 17 hour session with 40 amendments.
The unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent as 4.7 million people were out of work, down from 6.6 percent in August. Employed numbers rose to 82 million after seasonal shifts, and average earnings for about 50 million workers rose six cents per hour to 3.71 dollars, or 1.51 dollars per week to 138.75.
Da vid Ferguson, 78, of Cambridge, author of the Ferguson Act banning strikes by public employees, died Wednesday at Guernsey Memorial Hospital. A seven term Ohio senator from 1946 to 1962, he also sponsored creation of Salt Fork Lake State Park in Guernsey County.
Cool and clammy conditions may dampen weekend plans across the area. Tonight will be in the 40s with a chance of showers. Tomorrow's high will be in the low 30s with variable clouds and continued cool weather. Sunday is expected to be similar with more of the same.
Bill McMahon, 18, the Mid dletown Journal's 1972 Ohio Newsboy of the Year, met Vice President Spiro Agnew at the White House. The Oxford bound freshman toured the building and returned later to Dulles Airport, after a trip sponsored by the Ohio Circulation Managers Association.
