Franklin district weighs 9.79 mill levy to fund athletics
The Franklin district seeks voter approval of a 9.79 mill continuing operating levy to generate about 3.1 million dollars annually and restore extracurriculars and busing. The pay to participate group raised over 170 thousand dollars but needs 107 thousand more by November for winter sports. A 3-2 board vote declined to enforce pay to participate, angering many parents. Heidi Fella and Ben Miller backed the initiative and attended Monday’s meeting. The board later endorsed the levy for November 2 and awarded the Concerned Parents group a Good Neighbor award, drawing criticism from a resident who questioned the board’s endorsement.

Ruffin Sentenced to Four Years in Coercion Case Remnants
Ruffin received a four year term after pleading guilty to gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. He testified against a co defendant while another co defendant Gary Benson faces sentencing and a third co defendant Cardale Goens faces trial for capital murder. The case stems from a December 2003 drug house killing in Hamilton where Watson was bound and shot then dismembered and body parts dumped. Ruffin’s attorney called the sentence longer than expected and prosecution said it was appropriate.
