Clear, cold weather grips the Midwest and East as frost warnings cover 13 states from the Great Lakes to Tennessee. Temperatures dip into the 20s in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan with 30s extending into parts of the South and mis- readings continue.
A cold night is forecast for the Miami Valley with a low near 35 and a chance of frost. Sunday warms to around 65 with possible showers by tomorrow evening moving into southeast Pennsylvania. Lone Rock Wisconsin reported 27 shortly after midnight and Cleveland area Lindhurst saw 2 inches of snow from a Great Lakes storm.
Czechoslovak and Soviet leaders reached agreement during Kremlin talks to stage a withdrawal of troops in stages, with a large force remaining near the West German border. The communique also calls for press under socialist control and a stronger Communist party role as Dubcek era reforms face rollback.
More than 1,000 U S infantry and many warplanes attacked a Viet Cong base camp in the marshes 58 miles southwest of Saigon. At least 159 enemy soldiers were killed while one American died and 25 wounded. A bridge linking Saigon to delta food supplies was blown by explosives.
Eight Main Street businesses in Buffalo were struck by bullets from a passing car as anti Wallace demonstrators moved toward his hotel after a Wallace rally. No injuries reported. Wallace was safe in a hotel room with aides. Police did not apprehend the vehicle or its four occupants.
Backers of George C. Wallace say Marcus LeMay will not appear on Ohio ballots for the November election. If Wallace wins Supreme Court relief to place the American Independent Party candidate, Marvin Griffin would be listed as vice president. Griffin had been named earlier as a stand‑in for LeMay, announced in Pittsburgh.
