Tornado Wrecks LaRose Amid Hurricane Hilda Toll

In LaRose Louisiana a tornado spawned by Hurricane Hilda cut a 50 yard path through the Cajun town killing at least 20 people and destroying 30 homes. Rescue teams and Coast Guard helicopters searched for the injured as authorities reported 20 dead with figures uncertain. President Johnson declared the area a disaster and freed federal funds for aid as residents faced rising flood fears and evacuation.

Evacuees Ride Out Hilda On Southern Pacific Trains

About 4,000 residents from Louisiana Cajun country fled Hurricane Hilda by boarding two Southern Pacific evacuation trains carrying up to 50 refugees per boxcar. Evacuees were taken to Lafayette where schools centers and hotels sheltered them as Civil Defense and Red Cross organized aid for 15,000 sheltering in the area. Dad's Shot Kills Son During Hunt Near Lima

In Lima Ohio Gerald Kimmel exclaimed I’ve killed my boy after his 12 gauge shotgun fired during pigeon hunting. Three year old Gen Michael Kimmel died from a back shot while a witness said Kimel had fired while reloading after shooting a pigeon. The boy was climbing a fence nearby when struck.
