Dr. Thomas A. Shaheen, newly named superintendent of the San Francisco public schools serving about 90 000 pupils, pushed for liberty in learning. He echoed findings from Charles E. Silberman’s forthcoming Crisis in the Classroom, decrying schools as prisons and urging teachers to trust students rather than policing classrooms.
