Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, marks independence at midnight with 40,000 Nigerians at Lagos race course. The event lowers Britain’s Union Jack as Nigeria raises its green white flag, with Balewa leading the new era and international figures observing.
Don Rosini of Shamokin Pennsylvania narrowly escaped death when he flipped a gas tank switch incorrectly before takeoff from Bryan Defiance Airport. The four seater plane lost engine power at about 100 feet, crashing in a field. Rosini sustained minor injuries and an unknown nose injury, in fair condition at Defiance City Hospital.
Sen. John F. Kennedy resumes the campaign trail after rest, flying from Hyannisport to Chicago for a speech to the American Polish Congress, then to Minneapolis for a bean feed with the Minnesota Farm Labor party. He plans stops in St Paul, Duluth, and Hibbing before St Louis, after a two day bid through Upper New York for 45 electoral votes.
Massachusetts senator slept late with his wife Jacquline and daughter Caroline, while Mrs Kennedy, expecting a December baby, walked in fog. Kennedy’s staff rebutted Republican rival Richard Nixon, who called Democrats’ efforts to advance a Kennedy backed legislative program a monumental failure in the summer session.
Federal mediators held last to avert a nationwide strike against General Electric as talks resumed at midnight. The IUE voted Friday to strike after six weeks of wage disputes with GE, seeking 3 1/2 percent annual raises, a union shop, and other benefits. GE offered a three year deal with 3 percent on signing and 4 percent later, with removal of the cost of living escalator. ten locals voted against the walkout. Localities include Bridgeport Pittsfield Schenectady Syracuse Burlington Fort Wayne Oakland Augusta.
Jose H. Lewis Cosby was executed at the Ohio Penitentiary for a killing he says was accidental. The 25-year-old from Cleveland walked to the chair with apparent calm as a 60 day governor reprieve failed to produce new evidence.
Cosby, originally set to die July 29 for the 1958 shooting of Cleveland shoe store manager Raymond Mack during a robbery, claimed he was a store customer and heard a scuffle. He said two robbers bumped him, triggering a misfire. Governor DiSalle investigated, visiting the shoe store and interviewing Cosby on death row.
An Otter transport crash in fog near Orinda, Oakland area kills Maj. Gen. Carl F. Fritzsche and Brig. Gen. Thomas H. Hayes along with four others. A firefighter reported flames from the house as the craft clipped a hill while en route from Fort Ord to Crissy Field for a briefing with Courtney Johnson.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev temporarily leaves Manhattan for a 19 day stay at the Glen Cove estate on Long Island. He criticizes New York as a concrete center and repeats he may stay into the new year, possibly 1962, amid government restrictions on his travel within the city.
UN forces from Ghana leave Camp Leopold II in Leopoldville by order of Col. Joseph Mobutu to free space for Congolese troops. Ghana troops will be relieved by Tunisian forces while Mobutu cites Lumumba support as a factor and mentions a Chinese offer of aid and rejection of volunteers.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon presses his 1960 campaign into Ohio with stops planned after New York events. He contends Kennedy misstates hunger figures, while Klein calls the week a strong one as Nixon heads from Troy to Albany then on to Akron, Canton, Mansfield and Evansville.
Drivers on Miami and Miami Beach bus lines went on strike early today, halting service for about 150,000 passengers. A four cent per hour wage offer was rejected 433 to 15 after a four hour bargaining session. last buses operated at 6 a.m. with no service resumed during the strike.
Eisenhower flies to Washington for a White House strategy session on Western aims in the United Nations General Assembly. He plans a 9:30 a.m. Sunday meeting with Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Robert Menzies. The trip follows funeral services for Mrs. Eisenhower's mother, Elivera Doud, after a day of private grief.
About 40 guests attended simple Presbyterian services in the room where the Eisenhowers were married. Mrs. Doud, who lived in the brick house most of her 82 years, died in her sleep Thursday morning. Only family members and Lt Col John Eisenhower were present at the graveside rites and at the home. After the procession, Mrs. Eisenhower and Mrs. C Gordon Moore returned to the grave with Lt Col John Eisenhower. Press Secretary Hagerity noted no change in the President’s stance on meeting Khrushchev, making another summit unlikely.
In Havana the Cuban government refused to accept a U S note accusing Fidel Castro's regime of echoing international communism. The protest cited Cuba's October 17 nationalization of American banks and said the action was framed in fraudulent propaganda terms.
U S Ambassador Philip Bonsal tried to deliver the note Friday to acting Foreign Minister Carlos Olivares. Olivares rejected it after a heated exchange, calling the note a violation of elemental principles of diplomacy. The nationalized properties belonged to First National City Bank of New York First National Bank of Boston and Chase Manhattan Bank.
Chinese foreign minister Chan Yi said the Chinese people are determined to liberate Formosa and urged the militia to defend their homes and motherlands. The remark came as Peiping marked the 11th anniversary of the communist conquest with a massive parade in Tiananmen Square attended by Mao Zedong and foreign guests, with Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai among leaders present.
The text notes support for revolutionary movements in Asia Africa and Latin America and calls for arms reduction and nuclear ban. It also says Peiping has not softened its hard line toward the West or reduced its quarrel with Soviet Premier Khryushchev over the inevitability of war to advance communism.
