Safely Sedan Unveiled In New York State
Motor Vehicle Commissioner Vincent L. Tofany showcased a state funded scale model of a safety sedan designed to withstand front or rear impacts at 50 mph. The prototype includes a roof periscope, a 12 inch energy absorbing bumper, pedestrian safe silhouette, four wheel drive with anti lock brakes, and rollover protection. The design, a 4000 pound V8 four passenger car, was developed by Fairchild Hiller Corp under a $385,000 state contract and could enter mass production by the early 1970s if $5 million more is approved for further testing.
