Strike Vote Underway by Western Railroad Locomotive Engineers

A strike vote is being taken by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers on about twenty western railroads. The union seeks adding a third engineer to operating crews of multiple unit diesel engines used for passenger and freight service. Grand Chief Engineer Alvanley Johnston cites safety, noting one engineer and one fireman currently staff the crew. Percy Shields says roughly 16 or 17 roads may vote, with exact numbers pending returns. Santa Fe mentioned as a road, with voting potentially lasting three weeks before a strike date is set.

Prone Position Bed Aims To Ease Pilot Fatigue

Air Force researchers at Wright Field test a prone position bed for pilots to reduce cockpit discomfort. The device supports long missions by distributing weight on a nylon net and adjusting for body size, with tests on B-17 and TF-80 aircraft and plans for further evaluation.

Railroad Rate Hearing Opens to Consider 13 Percent Increase

The Interstate Commerce Commission launches public hearings on a railroads plea for a 13 per cent freight rate rise. Carriers seek eight per cent immediately and 13 per cent after studying earnings, arguing postwar increases of about 40 per cent still fail to cover rising costs. The move coincides with recent wage hikes, with water carriers warning of possible ship and barge freight increases. Starch was first commercially produced from corn in 1842.
