Senator John McClellan Dies at 81 in Arkansas

Senator John L. McClellan, 81, longtime U S senator from Arkansas and second in seniority, died in his Little Rock apartment. His body was found by his wife about 6:30 a m. He had announced plans not to seek another term and would have turned 83 two months after his Senate term ended. He had half a century in public office and a pacemaker implanted last summer. He said his health was not a factor in retirement plans.

Fireproofed home tragedy claims Middletown woman life

A 65 year old Middletown resident, Mrs. Mary Moorman, died from carbon monoxide poisoning after a blaze that began before 2 am. Firefighters and police entered the smoke filled house at 1504 North Breiel Boulevard but could not save her. The den fire burned through the floor into the basement, with smoke spreading via the ventilation system. The home valued around 100000 with damages near 30000. Mrs. Moorman had been a local figure since 1925 and leaves two sons and three grandchildren. Arrangements are pending for her son Robert.

Rhodesia claims bases in Mozambique destroyed

Rhodesia says its ground and air forces destroyed two guerrilla bases in Mozambique and killed at least 1200 black nationalists. A military communique says raids penetrated 132 inside Mozambique and targeted fighters backing a white minority government. Three black nationalist leaders agreed to meet Prime Minister Ian Smith for talks on elections and black rule, while Nkomo rejected the offer as deceit. Smith offered immediate talks with moderates and universal suffrage in exchange for safeguards for whites. Internees named Muzorewa Sithole and Chirau reportedly accepted. talks expected to begin within days.

Berlin AP reports the steam locomotive blast at an East German railway station killed eight and injured 45, with about 35 released after hospital treatment according to ADN.

U S Trade Deficit Reaches Record Monthly High

The October trade deficit hit a record $3.1 billion as a dock strike cut exports and reduced imports to $12.3 billion. Exports fell to $9.2 billion the lowest since March 1976 while imports slipped from $12.6 billion. East and Gulf coast dock workers were set to vote on a contract to end the containerized strike.
