Bread Group Breaks In With Ballads Not Rock
Bread stayed with softer balladry after early advice urged a rock single. Lead singer David Gates recalls Made It With You becoming their first hit while hits like It Dont Matter to Me and If solidified their success and popularized ballads in rock. James Griffin notes Bacharach’s melody simplicity guiding their sound. Members Gates Botts Knechtel bring varied backgrounds from Tulsa to Los Angeles and studio work with Campbell and Garfunkel. The fifth album was recorded in seven weeks with six new songs and on the fly lyric and melody tweaks.
