Rikers Island inmates seize officers in major jail disturbance

About 600 inmates armed with homemade weapons took five correction officers hostage in two cellblocks at Rikers Island. Some 450 armed guards stood by as officials negotiated eight demands for better conditions with inmate representatives. Police mobilized helicopters, boats, and tear gas while Mayor Beame and Judge Lasker monitored the situation.

Ohio State studies prostitution to explore decriminalization

Ohio Attorney General William Brown approves a year long research project by Ohio State University officials and faculty across several colleges to gather data on prostitution in Ohio and to assess whether decriminalization is feasible. The study will include statistical data from police and prosecutors and attitudes from the public and potential employers. A decriminalization bill could be drafted if findings support regulation within local controls.
