Inmate dies as jail cell fire traps prisoner at park
At Winter Park Florida a prisoner trapped in a smoke filled cell after a door welded shut by an unknown factor died. Stricken mother Mrs. Strawlee Moore pleaded for help as rescuers dragged prisoners from the rear of the police station. Michael Moore 21 and De Warne Paige 19 had been jailed on trespassing charges at Rollins College. Paige survived. Moore died after guards and rescuers reached the cell. Fire officials found burning mattresses in the center of the cell. Paige and two other prisoners, a policeman and a fireman were hospitalized. Mrs. Moore treated for shock. It was unclear how the fire started or who piled the mattresses.

Union chief says drug use by drivers is a gross exaggeration
Ira Farmer president of Local 100 in southwest Ohio disputes Senate subcommittee charges that interstate truck drivers routinely use drugs or alcohol. He cites a union survey showing most drivers, especially private haulers or nonunion firms, stay within professional norms. He confirms interviews with members and company officials but says a few exceptions do not prove widespread abuse.
