Nation prepares for the president's funeral with a flag draped casket at the White House. The service schedule includes lying in state in the Capitol Sunday and funeral Monday with state leaders and mourners expected.
President John F Kennedy lies in death in the White House East Room as family and government leaders including former Presidents Eisenhower Hoover Truman and Johnson prepare to view the body. A state viewing runs Sunday at the Capitol rotunda before a noon Monday funeral at St Matthew's Cathedral with Cardinal Cushing presiding.
Lyndon B. Johnson assumes the presidency after Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas. He meets with Eisenhower and plans Cabinet talks as he pledges national unity and bipartisan support, after taking the oath aboard a jet in Dallas. Jacqueline Kennedy witnessed the oath as the nation reels from the tragedy.
The oath was administered aboard the plane by Judge Sarah T. Hughes the first woman to do so. Johnson's wife Lady Bird and Jacqueline Kennedy attended as aides and medical staff surrounded the bloodstained president. Johnson issued a first order and then began calls to Rose Kennedy from the air while Mrs. Kennedy mourned.
Dallas police and FBI charge 24 year old Lee Harvey Oswald with murder in President Kennedy's assassination after a rapid sequence of events. Oswald denied the crime, claimed innocence, and was described as arrogant by investigators as the probe expands.
Mrs Kennedy kissed her husband goodbye on his lips and slipped his ring on his finger as she stayed by his side from Dallas to burial. She wore a pink suit stained with blood and remained dazed yet composed as Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath aboard the presidential plane. The tragedy disrupted planned Cape Cod birthday gatherings for Caroline and John Jr.

F H Woods of Cleveland, head of retirement hotels, built the house ten years ago and sold it two years prior to Robert Pollock. He described the home as fireproof, noting thick concrete walls and four foot doors. The facility housed infirm and mentally ill patients discharged from state hospitals, with ages ranging from 38 to 100.
Jacqueline Kennedy rode with the casket as John F. Kennedy’s body was moved from Bethesda Naval Hospital to the White House in a blue Navy ambulance. Robert F. Kennedy accompanied the procession, and Mrs. Kennedy wore the pink suit from Dallas as she walked beside the casket into the northwest White House entrance.
