Governor William S. Beardsley died from chest injuries after his car rear ended a pickup on State Highway 60 north of Des Moines. The 53 year old Republican, a Eisenhower supporter, led highway safety efforts and leaves a wife and four children. Lt. Gov. Leo Elthon becomes acting governor until Leo Hoegh is inaugurated. Beardsley’s death came less than two months before finishing his third term.
