In Rochester Minnesota, Rev John Eastman, 28, and his six children Pamela seven, Mary five, James four, Carol three, Thomas two, and John one month, were killed when the car slammed into a concrete bridge abutment on a county road near Dover. Eastman, his wife at a school play, had driven the Lewiston school bus and was a church leader in Utica and Lewiston. An autopsy was ordered to check for heart attack or seizure.

Nine alarm fire in a lower Manhattan textile district building trapped and killed three firemen. Lt. John A. McDermott 34 Francis J. Sammon 34 and John C. Cosner 25 perished near a basement stair slide used to move merchandise to the cellar.
