China launches a massive attack on Indian forces near Walong in the eastern Himalayas. The Chinese assault follows Indian raids that captured outposts, with fighting expanding north and west of Walong as Indian and allied weaponry boosts build up.
The forecast calls for an Indian summer fade with a cold front from the West. Rain will continue into Saturday and may mix with snow flurries as temperatures drop. Tonight's low near 41 and a high around 45 tomorrow. The cold remains through Tuesday or Wednesday. Yesterday's high reached 62 at 3 pm and overnight low was 48 at 8 am.
Timmy Athos, 24, who once measured 5 feet 7 and a half inches and failed the NYPD exam, trained with weights on an orange crate and neck brace. He spent 20 hours lying down before the test to avoid settling, then was carried to Manhattan and finally measured 5 feet 8 inches, meeting the minimum requirement.
In Bermuda the Greek freighter Captain George burned as 18 crewmen disappeared after abandoning the ship as flames fed a cargo of explosives. Coast Guard says seven crew were rescued by nearby freighters. 18 were thrown into 45 foot waves when the lifeboat capsized amid a gale.

The missive was delivered as Havana pressed for settlement of the Cuban crisis while U.S. plans for aerial surveillance faced a sharp warning from Havana.
