Chimney toppled after 74 years at McKinley school

Dynamite from Webster Blasting toppled the McKinley Elementary School chimney near the base of the building in Middletown. The 1930 constructed school, now being replaced, drew alumni and neighbors who watched the controlled demolition and later sought memory bricks from the site.

Death row population drops for third straight year

The 2003 death row population fell to a 30 year low as 144 inmates in 25 states were given the death penalty, 24 fewer than 2002. Illinois eliminated its death row as inmates were found innocent, while experts cite public hesitation and legal changes as factors. At year end, 3,374 prisoners awaited execution, 188 fewer than 2002. Illinois accounted for 84 percent of the decline.

Insurgents Press Mosul as Fallujah Battle Intensifies

Insurgents stormed two Mosul police stations killing several Iraqi troops while fighting raged in Fallujah after the U.S. led assault. A Western woman hostage and other civilians were reported amid a widening crisis as U.S. Marines held positions and bombarded insurgent strongholds. Oil wells were set ablaze in northern Iraq as clashes spread through Sunni areas.

Accident victim James Reed struggles after 2003 crash

In Middletown on November 13 2003 James Reed 76 en route to lunch at the Senior Citizens Center was struck head on by a drunken driver on Verity Parkway. Reed survived severe head injury four broken ribs a fractured pelvis and a back injury after helicopter transport to Miami Valley Hospital. He now uses a walker and has long term memory loss and resides at Garden Manor.
