Pretoria withdraws ambassador R F Botha for urgent consultations as the General Assembly bars South Africa from speaking or voting. Vorster freezes the $1 million annual UN contribution amid a 91-22 vote with 19 abstentions. The US and several West European states call the move illegal.
Tim Keyes of Salt Lake City found his 1967 Plymouth filling with smoke during rush hour. He drove into a $1 automatic car wash with windows down and extinguished the fire himself. Water damage was extensive but fire outbreak prevented further damage.
US coal mine operators and the United Mine Workers council signaled nearing a contract end after a 12 hour bargaining session. Union leaders study the proposal as Chief negotiator Guy Farmer says it could settle the contract. The brightened outlook follows widespread layoffs in allied industries.

Rolling outages are planned only if the strike lasts beyond Christmas. State Sen. Michael J. Maloney backed the call for conservation and warned he could declare an energy crisis if needed.

Ronald C. O Bryan pleaded innocent to charges he killed his eight year old son Timothy by poisoning Halloween candy in an insurance scheme. He faces trial January 6 with pre trial hearings December 16. Police say he also tried to poison daughter Elizabeth and three other children.
