Washington reports intensifying U S air and missile defenses as Cuba hosts Il 28 bombers with nuclear capability. Navy and Air Force interceptors rally, Nike Hercules missiles deploy in southern Florida, while MiG fighters pose stealthy bomber risk from Cuba and beyond.
Havana reports Fidel Castro angrily rebuffed Soviet missile pullout and pressed five demands to end the crisis including base surrender at Guantanamo Bay and lifting U.S. embargo. China backs Cuba. Rodriguez warns Moscow Cuba not to be sacrificed as 1938 Czechoslovakia.
A small private plane dove from overcast skies into a row of homes in East Meadow New York killing a 14 month old child on the ground and the pilot. Three homes caught fire and three people were injured including a firefighter. The home struck belonged to George Shapiro.
Washington reports the U S Navy examined three ships and two freighters, identifying six to eight missiles on each deck. The destroyer Barry pressed the freighter Anosov at dawn as the Soviet captain refused full disclosure. Officials doubt all 42 missiles are out of Cuba, with rumors of hidden arms in caves. No confirmation on jet bombers.
In Hyde Park New York Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt was buried Saturday beside her husband in the rose garden of his estate. The funeral attended by all three White House successors included President Truman and Jacqueline Kennedy. A prayer from St Francis of Assisi was recited as requested by Mrs Roosevelt. Thousands gathered outside St James Episcopal Church for the private service with a church reading from Corinthians and a French Bible once owned by Mrs Roosevelt.

Two fires hit a downtown furniture store and a service station in Cambridge Ohio causing about 95000 dollars in damage. An attendant Albert Keith 22 was burned seriously while draining gasoline inside the Ashland Oil Co station. The blaze stayed confined to the service station and did not threaten a nearby bulk plant.
Lillian Cross was buried in Miami on the same day as Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, honoring the woman who saved Roosevelt from an assassin’s pistol 29 years ago at a Bayfront rally in 1933. Cross died Thursday at 78 in a St. Petersburg Masonic home and was transported to Miami for final rites.
