AP reports late returns cut John F Kennedy's popular vote lead to 278,277 from nearly 70 million ballots with Kennedy at 50.2 percent and Nixon at 49.8 percent. With 1,875 units unreported, Kennedy held 332 electoral votes to Nixon's 191, not yet enough for victory.
Paratroop battalions topple President Ngo Dinh Diem in Saigon after a brief dawn uprising. A rebel military committee led by Col. Nguyen Chanh Thi forms a temporary government to restore security against Communist influence. Casualties numbered 20 to 30 with several wounded. Americans in country unscathed.
President-elect John F Kennedy departs Hyannis Port for a working vacation in Palm Beach to map his cabinet, meet Lyndon Johnson, and discuss roles for Eisenhower Nixon and Stevenson. Key posts may include CIA head Allen Dulles and FBI chief J Edgar Hoover staying on. Kennedy names Clark Clifford liaison and assigns four aides to White House duties.
