Plane Crash Kills Scientist and Navy Crew in Antarctica
A University of Minnesota scientist Dr. Edward C. Thiel and four U.S. Navy men died when a Navy P2V7A Neptune crashed on takeoff from Wilkes Station in Antarctica during a magnetic mapping flight. Four others were burned but recovering. a C130 is expected to fly them home to McMurdo Sound weather permitting. The expedition, part of Operation Deep Freeze 62, was the longest airborne scientific mission yet and the first American flight to the Soviet Mirny base. Names of the deceased include Lt. Cmdr. William Douglas Counts and James Leonard Gray among others. injured crew were Lt. Elias J. Stentz and four technicians.
