In Sandy Utah a mammoth skeleton is being recovered from an apartment complex yard drawing hundreds of visitors daily. Utah Historical Society and University of Utah experts date the remains at 11 000 to 20 000 years old with 35 bones recovered including a missing skull and tusks. The bones will be stored at a museum as dig continues.
U S District Judge Frank J. Battisti granted acquittal Friday to eight former Ohio National Guardsmen charged in the May 4 1970 Kent State shootings. The judge ruled the government failed to show the needed intent to deprive civil rights beyond a reasonable doubt.
More than 1,000 miners in southern Ohio stage wildcat walkouts as a nationwide strike nears. About 500 at Peabody Sunny Hill near New Lexington refuse to cross picket lines, while 600 at American Electric Meigs and Raccoon mines fail to report. UMW District 6 President Guzek orders a return to work, but doubts compliance.
The Barnitz Fund committed 35000 to the Middletown Area United Way for the Salvation Army Citadel capital program on Clinton Street. Plans include a south entrance, two new offices, a private interview room, and essential renovations.
