Laird Seeks Faster U S Troop Withdrawals From Vietnam
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird said he will urge President Nixon to accelerate American troop withdrawals from Vietnam. After a five day Saigon trip he called South Vietnamese progress encouraging and said the administration’s transfer of war conduct to Saigon is on or ahead of schedule. He avoided predicting next withdrawal phase but foresees less U S air power as South Vietnamese forces grow stronger. He noted some troops will stay to guard American support and logistics. A residual force size next year was not disclosed amid talk of about 40 000 by next summer and an official next week withdrawal size. US troop strength now 191 000, slated to fall to 184 000 by December 1.
