Directed Verdict Ends Murder Trial in Middletown
Kerry Martin, 19, acquitted of first degree murder by Judge Warren C. Young after an eight day trial in Common Pleas Court Middletown. The jury was directed to verdict following defense objections and a key witness testimony. Martin remains jailed at Warren County Jail on allegations unrelated to the acquittal while Army police at Ft. Knox Ky seek custody. The case centered on the March 15 or 16 death of Jamela Haynes 29, whose body was found in a derelict basement east of Middletown. The prosecution’s case rested on a motive of robbery and Martin’s fingerprint but the judge ruled the evidence insufficient for conviction. The defense argued the state failed to prove its case and the motion for dismissal was sustained. The courtroom emotions ran high as Martin faced tearful relatives after the verdict.
