Nixon topped McGovern 16 to 3 in the midnight Dixville Notch ballot as locals cast early presidential votes at Balsam's Hotel. The result marks a strong swing after a four year previous loss to Humphrey and reflects brisk turnout despite other contests on the ballot.
The final Gallup Poll before today's election shows President Nixon leading Senator George McGovern 61 percent to 35 percent with 62 to 38 after undecided votes are allocated. Pollster George Gallup calls it a landslide proportion in Princeton New Jersey.
Voters faced a record turnout to decide Nixon or McGovern for the White House with Congress on the line. Nixon campaigned in California while McGovern urged victory across 26 states, both chasing Senate and House gains as race tensions mounted nationwide.
