In the Journal election coverage Democrats gained heavily in the House but underperformed in the Senate. Ohio governor results are broken down county by county. Richard Celeste pledges active governor team role amid possible political split. City Commissioners accept the resignation of Planning Commission Chairman Ray Fening.
In Ohio, former governor James A. Rhodes appears to lead Gov. John J. Gilligan by less than 0.5 percent amid impounded ballots and expected recounts. Senate candidate John Glenn won a near million vote landslide over Ralph Perk, leading in all 88 counties.
Democrats gain seats across the national map as voter discontent with Republican scandals and the economy shifts control in the House and Senate and boosts gubernatorial wins. In Ohio strong showings by Gilligan and Rhodes lead to a close governor’s race. Glenn cruises to the Senate with a wide margin in Ohio while Rhodes concedes and then briefly leads again. Butler County districts swing toward Republicans in some races while local levies and mayoral contests in Monroe and Middletown reflect mixed votes.
Democrats swept to strong gains in both the Ohio Senate and House. They won 13 of 18 Senate races to secure a 21 to 12 veto-proof edge, and built at least 58 House seats with 60 needed to override a governor’s veto. Several incumbents from both parties lost, reshaping the state’s political balance.
Clearing skies drop tonight to the mid 30s in Middletown. Thursday brings sunny skies with highs in the low 50s. Yesterday's high reached 50 and overnight low 33. The extended outlook calls for fair skies Friday through Sunday.
