President Truman, speaking from the White House porch, calls on all Americans to cooperate in addressing the nation s problems and solving urgent issues facing the country.
In Washington crowds greet President Truman as Democrats outline plans to scrap Taft Hartley and draft a new labor law. They advocate a cabinet rank health education and security department, a broad housing bill, price controls, and expanded health insurance and social security.
Two wildfires scorched more than 16 000 acres of drought battered land in Southern California. The Topanga Canyon blaze destroyed numerous homes near the Pacific and burned about 6 000 acres, injuring about 20 people. A second Santa Ana district fire stretched 10 miles, closing State Highway 18 and prompting 800 to fight the flames.
Prairie fires driven by high winds scorched nearly 30 000 acres of dry grassland across Oklahoma yesterday near Claremore Chouteau Sapulpa and Bowlegs. Firefighters and volunteers fought the flames with wet sacks and tractor drawn plows to make back furrows. No injuries were reported though homes and hundreds of cattle were imperiled and later extinguished.
A rare 30 mile Santana wind from the San Fernando Valley drove flames that forced hundreds to flee. Fire officials report about 55 homes, mostly small frame dwellings, destroyed with some additional damage. Evacuees included Silvia Park Topanga Woods Topanga Flat and Trippett Ranch communities as flames neared Fernwood. About 2000 residents were alerted to evacuate.
In Munich, Germany, fourteen German war criminals were hanged at Landsberg prison as part of a speeded up series of executions. One man received a last minute reprieve as the U.S. Military Government maintained the pace, with 43 executions total since resumed on October 15.
Kent Ohio community chest drive concluded with a total of 17854 dollars, exceeding the goal by 404 dollars. The fundraiser gathered support from local residents and organizations across Kent, helping to fund local services and programs.
U S delegate John Foster Dulles rebuked Russian accusations that the United States plans aggression. He said disarmament halted and strength increased, to benefit freedom and allies, while criticizing the UN Security Council veto and UNSCOB report.
President Truman arrived in Cincinnati as Hamilton County Democrats who failed to carry the county in the election greeted the victory train for about 30 minutes. Thousands gathered in the station, cheering as Truman appeared on the rear platform and urged continued support for four more years of hard work.
Washington reports indicate the United States secretly revitalized three French Divisions in the French zone of occupied Germany with American equipment valued at about 5 million dollars. The move, described as loaned arms, appears tied to Gen. Lucius D. Clay’s reserve stocks, with fresh U.S. shipments expected to replace them.
Rescuers in Japan dug out 100 miners trapped in a tunnel at the Yubari mine near Sapporo Hokkaido. Hope for the men had been nearly abandoned as operations continued.
Three aircraft vanish in the North Pacific area with 30 or more aboard. A Pacific Alaska DC-3 on a Anchorage to Seattle leg disappeared near Cape Spencer after Yakutat to Annette Island, with 11 to 15 aboard. A Navy Neptune bomber and a PBY Catalina also reported missing near the Washington coast and Aleutians.
The United Nations Security Council urged Israel to withdraw to October 14 positions in the Negev and limited sanctions to a general UN Charter framework. Britain's and China's sponsorship backed a resolution authorizing provisional troop lines and assigning Bunche authority to enforce limits. The vote was 9 to 1 with the Soviet Union opposing and Russia abstaining.
The state opens its case against Mrs. Mary Clay Watts charged with first degree murder in the sleep overdose death of her 11 year old daughter Barbara Ann Watts in Cincinnati. Prosecutor Carson Hoy asserts only the defendant could have given the poison and inheritance motive is alleged. Defense lawyers vow to show the toxins came from other sources and challenge the murder claim.
Anthony Kamel of Lorain escaped from the Warrensville workhouse less than a day after being jailed for 22 days on seven counts of intoxication and six contempt of court charges. He was listed as 40 years old.
Harold L. Ickes, the former New Deal critic, figures in rumors of a Truman cabinet shakeup. Reports say Ickes might be recalled after a feud over Pauley, with possible short-term roles and no broad reprisals, while other ministers face uncertain futures.
Ohio Republicans could gain a one seat edge in the state Senate if Raymond E. Hildebrand is reelected over Democrat Robert C. Ragan. U S dependents in Nanking and Shanghai to be evacuated as ships become available. Maj. Gen. Barr notes about 1,000 wives and children will depart while U S personnel remain at posts. Vice Admiral Badger says China base at Tsingtao will not be abandoned and Marines may land in Shanghai to protect 3,500 Americans.
Dayton police tied a $5,000 store holdup of Rose and Joe Abramowitz to a man suspected of staging four prior robberies in the past month. The victims were robbed as they closed their store yesterday and prepared to go home.
