Polls Won't Keep Extended Hours in Ohio
US District Judge Frank J. Battisti rejected a request by McGovern-Shriver backers to keep polling places in Ohio open an extra three hours. He said the federal court has no jurisdiction to extend voting hours beyond 6:30 p.m. unless constitutional rights are violated. The action targeted Secretary of State Ted W. Brown and Ohio boards of elections, arguing increased turnout from 700,000 more voters would overwhelm facilities. Battisti warned of potential issues only if constitutional violations occur and urged use of paper ballots to prevent delays. Richard Sklar, McGovern state campaign chair, said no further legal steps planned unless election-day problems arise.
