Bridge protests shut Ambassador Bridge With U S flag ripped

Protesters halted the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor yesterday to oppose a planned nuclear test on Amchitka Island. A similar action closed the Blue Water Bridge linking Port Huron to Sarnia, Ontario.

Final Amchitka blast appeal amid safety doubts

Environmental groups, blocked by a U S Court of Appeals, pressed again to stop the Amchitka underground test off the Alaska coast. The seven conservationist groups warned the Cannikin explosion could trigger earthquakes and tidal waves while scientists noted uncertainty about the blast pattern and its effects on the northern Pacific.

Why Do They Want To Test It

Anchorage witnesses a clash over the Cannikin test as critics warn of earthquakes and radiation while supporters cite military value amid the Atomic Energy Commission and Defense Department push to detonate a five million ton TNT device tied to the Spartan antiballistic missile program. Scientists explain the blast would generate data for weapons and defense, but protesters worry about environmental damage and safety.

Radiation weapon concept tested on Amchitka site

On the ground a solar weapon disrupts targets via heat and shock. In space heat is ineffective without air to carry shock. An ICBM could be disabled by intense X rays and neutrons penetrating its skin and circuitry. A device emitting wide radiation particles would resist shielding. The described device sits 6,000 feet below Amchitka.
