Canned California Smog Used In Pollution Drive

Washington reports that canned California smog is used to urge the House to allow California to maintain its stricter auto exhaust control. A late House vote was expected on an amendment to require equal standards unless exemptions are granted, amid a broader $428.3 million three year pollution-control bill. The measure would let federal courts act against pollutant sources posing imminent health risks and mirrors a Senate bill. Rep. John D. Dingell backs a provision opposed by auto makers and opposed to a Senate amendment favoring California’s own standards, with Rep. Moss promoting restoration.
