On the eve of a unique presidential election, frustration and indecision define the campaign. Ford and Carter offer few compelling themes, voters seek clear reasons to vote, and analysts note high undecided levels and low intensity, leaving the contest close.
President Ford repeats his late campaign tactic with an 11th hour visit to Ohio as polls near opening. The Ohio stop mirrors his successful primary strategy and aims to boost momentum in the closing hours.
In Sacramento Carter vows not to lose as he targets California's 45 electoral votes. aides dispute polls showing Ford ahead or tied and cite Gallup sample flaws. Carter campaigns in San Francisco and Sacramento with rallies telecast to multiple states, while planning stops in Los Angeles and Michigan. Barbara Jordan and Edmund Brown Jr. join him at the San Francisco event.
Mondale ends 1976 Ohio tour urging turnout to back Carter. He spoke to Black crowds in Cleveland with Coretta King and criticized Ford for insensitivity to unemployment. Ford and Carter campaigns left Ohio as voters faced a tight race and the state’s pivotal role in the election.
In Ohio, 10 Democratic leaders back a push for large turnout in 28 counties where 450000 voters were registered. They will contact voters from northeast Ohio on Tuesday as turnout is forecast high by Secretary of State Ted W. Brown at 4.2 million.
Republicans hedge on high turnout as they aim to limit Carter’s pluralities. The party counts on reduced voter participation to minimize Democratic gains, betting that a subdued election day will blunt Carter's advantage and narrow margins.
