Comsat Scientists To Retry Satellite Link This Month
Washington AP reports Comsat scientists will attempt another Pacific satellite link this month after the Lani Bird failed to reach a stable hover above the Gilbert islands. The craft remained in a cigar shaped orbit from 1,840 to 23,000 miles, limiting earth contact though its transmitter still operated briefly. Officials call the mission a scientific toy amid disappointment. The launch used a kick motor Sunday but did not place the satellite in the intended orbit. Communications Satellite Corp confirmed the setback. An earlier satellite, Early Bird, relays signals across the Atlantic.
