An explosion ripped through a downtown Marietta drugstore ending a Halloween parade crowd. Dozens were killed or injured as Civil Defense workers cleared debris and searched for victims. The two story concrete building collapsed partly as windows shattered and cars nearby were damaged.
INDIANAPOLIS AP A man describes a deadly explosion at a coliseum during an ice show. He and his wife were hit by a concrete slab weighing hundreds of pounds, he moved the slab himself to escape, and several people were burned. He is a state warrant officer, badly shaken and with injuries, while his wife’s condition was unclear.
An explosion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum during the Holiday on Ice Revue killed at least 62 and injured about 385. Gas likely caused bystander collapse ripped through box seats and bleachers, sending debris and bodies across the rink. Fire crews, police, and Civil Defense workers conducted the grim rescue as authorities vowed a full structural blow inspection.
Miami, AP reports Leo A. McGraw aged 52 seeks 2.536 million dollars in damages from R J Reynolds Tobacco Co claiming he contracted lung cancer from smoking the firm’s cigarettes. He smoked three packs daily for 30 years and says cancer led to partial lung removal in 192.
Havana Radio reported a violent storm in Oriente Province damaging homes cutting communications and washing out a Yumuri River bridge near Baracoa. The report was monitored in Miami. Baracoa lies near Cuba's eastern tip.
MOSCOW AP The Soviet Union announced it has launched a space ship into orbit The unmanned craft carries control mechanisms allowing maneuvering in all directions It achieved heights from 343 to 592 kilometers and repeatedly transmitted data to listening stations with normal performance
In Tokyo an informed U S source says talks with Japanese defense officials are under way to reduce American military costs and streamline units. About 4 000 U S personnel in Japan could face reductions, but no quick decision is expected amid Japan's looming general election. Kennedy cited possible withdrawals in the Far East, focusing on air units serving Korea and defense of Japan.

The note recalls prior 1962 claims of Nationalist U2 losses and U.S. sales of two U2 aircraft.
King Hassan II of Morocco announced that Algerian forces attacked the Moroccan town of Figuig near the frontier. He ordered withdrawal of Moroccan troops and pledged to cease hostilities per a Mali agreement, while not retaliating. A cease-fire is to begin at midnight.

Accidental carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled the cause in the deaths of Richard Stoudmire, 55, and a woman tentatively identified as Cleo Hicks, about 45, found in Stoudamire's Mansfield apartment. Two unvented gas heaters and an oven were burning when the bodies were discovered.
