Off-Duty Cops Picket For Harassed Gilligan
More than 150 off duty policemen in civilian clothes picketed for two hours in New York to defend Lt. Thomas R. Gilligan who was cleared by a grand jury and a police review board in the fatal 15 year old James Powell shooting. The protest occurred near his Stuyvesant Town apartment as Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant rioting followed the incident. Sgt. Jeremiah O Connor said protesters came to show support and noted a prior picket at Stuyvesant Town seeking Gilligan to move out. A crowd of about 300, including many Negroes, watched silently.
