Traffic accidents across the nation claimed 155 lives Thursday in a Memorial Day record for a one day observance. The toll exceeded the National Safety Council estimate of 130 for the 30 hour period and compared with 107 for 1962.
Photographs from the Conrad show hull, diving plane and sail area of the Thresher lying on the ocean floor about 8,400 feet deep. The submarine sank April 10 with 129 aboard during a deep sea test. Navy Court of Inquiry in Portsmouth NH will review the images. The Trieste stands by in Boston ready to assist if more photos are needed.
The United States and Britain raise reciprocal currency arrangements from 50 million to 500 million to protect the dollar and pound from speculation. The Federal Reserve Board and the Bank of England say the tenfold increase strengthens world payments and international liquidity by boosting foreign exchange availability during trouble.
Ohio Highway Safety Department reports the first Memorial Day with no traffic deaths in state records during a 102 hour holiday. Director Warren Bud Nelson praised the result but warned it is premature to declare victory. Last year six died over the holiday. officials had projected 27 deaths this year, amid a weekend span from Wednesday evening to Sunday midnight.
The long Memorial Day holiday weekend brought back work in many states and saw 17 deaths across three fatal crashes. A northwest Connecticut two-car crash burned, killing several. Five people died in Iowa near Unionville, in Missouri a two-car crash claimed five, and a pickup-semi collision near Glendale Utah added to the toll.
In Dayton Ohio an aerial bomb exploded near Kettering Fairmont High School during outdoor graduation exercises injuring 14 year old Mark Witkus. Police said three 18 year old graduates wired and timed bombs as a prank. The youths were in custody as investigators review charges.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2.5 million strong CGT launches a 24 hour general strike after riotous protests to pressure President Jose Maria Guido to act on unemployment. The action aims to paralyze the economy while skeleton crews remain at essential services.
NEW YORK AP No shortage of sugar is threatened in the United States, the New York Coffee and Sugar Exchange said today, citing a memorandum to three congressional committees. The memo says exports from friendly nations will meet US needs, and that exchanges do not buy or sell for their own account.
A high pressure system moving from northeastern Ohio into New England will bring a warming trend as surface winds turn more southerly. Tonight and tomorrow expect clear skies and unseasonably cool temperatures with no rain. Yesterday's high reached 76 degrees and the low was 58. This morning the low was 32 degrees at 5 30 a.m.
New Philadelphia Ohio Samuel A Gerber aged 78 resident of Tuscarawas County Home died Thursday from injuries in an automobile accident. He is mourned by family and local authorities investigate. Obituary note records his long illness and service to community.
In Tallahassee Florida police used tear gas to disrupt two marches, arresting 257 demonstrators on Thursday the tenth day of antisegregation protests. About 220 students from Florida A&M were ordered to answer contempt charges, 37 others face unlawful assembly in City Court. The day also saw a second march broken up with tear gas and arrests as leaders vow continued action until desegregation.
Joseph Jones, 15, suffered second and third degree burns over most of his body when a cigarette ignited a can filled with paint thinner after a friend flipped it during a Thursday night incident. He was burned critically and transported to Lutheran Hospital.
Patricia Spades warns a 10 week leopard named Tinker Bell may derail her marriage to Frank Michelberger in Las Vegas. The animal reportedly refuses to sleep in a cage or away from the couple, prompting a tense discussion on domestication and wedding plans.
A businessmen's committee led by Henry Ford II says Kennedy era budget cuts are reasonable and practicable. They favor a tax reduction but not the full one proposed, see no need for 1965 1966 increases, and want a larger share of the cut to take effect in 1964.

In Saigon the AP reports communist guerrillas aimed at Americans when they ambushed a government patrol. Two U.S. special forces advisers, led the 100 mountain tribesmen, and were killed. Capt. James Brodt, 30, from Cocoa Beach Florida, and Pfe. Neil K. Maciver, 19, from Silver Spring Maryland, were the fallen advisers. The attackers reportedly singled out the Americans, then fled.
Vatican City AP report says Pope John XXIII, 81, suffered a sudden turn for the worse with an internal hemorrhage possibly from a stomach growth. Cardinals rushed to the Vatican as doctors warned of a complete reversal and urged prayers while the pontiff remained in bed.
Salinas Ecuador authorities impound two San Diego vessels the White Star and Ranger for alleged illegal fishing within waters. Navy officials say 21 boats will be impounded and captains tried if permits are lacking while 19 vessels dock in solidarity. US recognizes a three mile limit. Secretary Rust seeks release and negotiations.
