Four American Fliers Freed by China Head for Hawaii
Four U S airmen released by Communist China after more than two years in captivity arrived in Hong Kong and left for Hawaii within hours. Capt. Harold Fischer Jr and three others spoke of being well treated, and plans for a family reunion in Hawaii were announced. The fliers had been prisoners since the Korean War and were greeted by U S officials before boarding a transport to Hawaii for medical checks and reunions.

Ohio holiday toll sets national pace in traffic deaths
Ohio reported 26 highway fatalities over the Memorial Day weekend, ranking second nationally. The toll, including two drownings and two other accidents, pushed the three day total toward a national high of 571, with the union tally at 566 for the period. The National Safety Council had projected 375 fatalities.

Gunman Kills One in Dayton Bank Lobby Spree
Dayton police reported a wild shooting spree in the Third National Bank lobby just after 10 AM. At least one man was killed and six others injured, with another man shot at Winters Bank where the gunman was captured.

Pneumonia puts Civil War vet in oxygen tent
Albert Woolson 108, last surviving Union Army veteran, is hospitalized in Duluth Minnesota with bronchial pneumonia. An attendant at St Luke s Hospital says he rests quietly and improves slightly since 2:15 a.m. He is in an oxygen tent and his general condition is fair. Woolson visited his wife s grave Monday and was previously treated for lung congestion last February.

A C47 twin engine plane from Holloman Air Force Base crashed in the Sacramento Mountains near La Luz Canyon killing seven aboard. It had refueled and was returning to Clovis Air Force Base from Burbank California. Names listed include Majane A Miller and Lt R Forbes among others. A board will investigate the cause.
