Iraq week in review turmoil as police siege looms
Iraqi police build checkpoints and injure 38 at the entrance to an Iraqi military base. An Ansar al Sunnah Army affiliate claims the death of a Japanese contractor it abducted earlier this month. A planned crackdown in Baghdad will deploy more than 40 000 Iraqi soldiers and police, supported by U S troops, to cordon the city and conduct street sweeps, aiming to curb insurgents after a wave of violence that killed over 690 since the new Shiite led government was announced. Sunni clerics and Shiite militiamen traded accusations as tensions rise.
