Train derailment triggers mass evacuation in Rushville area

In Rushville and nearby Fairfield County communities 1500 residents were evacuated after a Conrail derailment spilled toxic ammonia oxide into Rush Creek. No injuries reported though EPA warned of possible irritation. many returned home as gases dissipated and officials urged caution.

Ford Brezhnev sign nuclear test agreement

President Ford and Leonid Brezhnev signed a five year treaty allowing American inspectors to visit Russian underground test sites during certain blasts up to 150 kilotons, with a possible total of 1 500 kilotons in sequences. The pact aims to ease broader limits on nuclear tests while maintaining on site checks and data exchange and will be sent to the Senate for ratification.

Weekend Rain Forecast With Highs Near 70

Rain is expected to arrive tonight and continue through much of the weekend with a 90 percent chance tonight and 70 percent Saturday. The National Weather Service notes a chance of showers Sunday and Monday, clearing by Tuesday. Lows around 60 tonight and highs near 70 tomorrow. Yesterday's official Middletown high was 77 and this morning's low 60.

Peace in Lebanon delayed after Jumblatt sister’s murder

In Beirut, 35 people were kidnapped and 11 Muslims reportedly executed after the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt's sister Linda al Atrash. Heavy fighting raged near the Syrian border as Christians and Muslims clashed. a postponed talks meeting between Jumblatt and President-elect Elias Sarkis was delayed again. A gunmen raid left Jumblatt's sister dead and two daughters wounded. Phalangist denials and calls for calm followed.
