CAPE CANAVERAL Fla RP expert scientific detective work has determined that troubles with an electrical amplifier caused astronaut Gordon Cooper to steer his space craft manually back to earth. Moisture corroded a connection on an Amp Cal amplifier and wiped out automatic controls near re-entry. An electrical short in an Amp Cal solder connection, likely from faulty insulation, knocked out the rest of the automatic re-entry controls leaving Cooper with the manual system.
