Hospital costs could reach $1000 a day by 1980 says AHA
The American Hospital Association warned of soaring costs in Medicare and Medicaid. AHA President-elect Jack Hahn said average inpatient charges may rise from $81.66 to about $119.50 by 1973 and that the $1,000 a day rate, while unlikely except in major urban centers, underscores the need for broad insurance pooling and cost controls. He noted labor and equipment drives costs and suggested consolidating hospital and physician services in Medicare and raising payroll taxes if needed. Moving patients to nursing homes could also trim expenses.

Ohio Senate Receives Liberalized Drug Law
In Columbus the Ohio Senate moved a broad drug bill from committee to floor. The measure lowers first offense marijuana charges from felony to misdemeanor and reclassifies marijuana as a hallucinogen. It also funds treatment centers and allows treatment in lieu of prosecution for dependent individuals and supervised methadone for incurable addicts. The House and Senate proposed riot laws and campus controls, while a separate bill would withhold funds from colleges during riots. A Senate resolution asks study of state investment policies. House probes campus disruption with focus on preserving property.
