Kansas Oklahoma tornado toll hits Udall and Blackwell hard

A pair of tornadoes ripped through 14 towns in Kansas and Oklahoma killing 77 and injuring more than 700. Udall Kansas suffered 55 deaths and near total destruction while Blackwell Oklahoma faced extensive damage and about 500 injuries. Rail and road communications were disrupted as rescue efforts began.

White House denies Mrs Hobby resignation amid husband illness

The White House said Mrs Oveta Culp Hobby has not resigned as secretary of health education and welfare. Press secretary James Haggerty cited her husband William Hobby's serious illness and stressed there was no substance to reports of her leaving government or being replaced by Clare Luce.

Weather forecast calls for scattered showers and warm highs

The forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with warmer temperatures and scattered showers tonight and tomorrow. Highs will reach the low 80s, after yesterday’s 75 at 5 30. Tonight’s low near 65, less drop than yesterday’s low of 57 at 5 a.m.

Ohio lawmakers approved two school related measures. A comic book and film bill bans obscene or crime provoking material for under 18 with fines up to 1000 dollars and six months in jail. A new school subsidy formula based on classroom units passed the Senate and moved to the House.

Aboard Big Bomber Feared Dead

A B36 bomber crashed in rugged West Texas ranch country during a thunderstorm killing at least nine. Rescue crews found nine bodies and reported no survivors aboard the craft believed to originate from Walker Air Force Base Roswell New Mexico. The crash occurred about 35 miles southwest of Sterling City near Goodfellow Air Force Base.

Georgetown Ohio and Adams County authorities hunt a thief with a grievance against county clerks. Noon robberies yesterday yielded $116 from Brown County clerk’s office and $61.20 from Adams County clerk’s office in West Union, 16 miles east.

Ford Ready to Counter UAW Demand for Annual Wage

Detroit report says Ford Motor Co. prepared to offer a counter proposal to the CIO United Auto Workers demand for a guaranteed annual wage. No details were released. Ford and General Motors have both said they remain open minded since early bargaining in April.

Senate- House clash over Ike highway plan deepens

In Washington the Senate backed a Democratic rival to President Eisenhower’s highway plan, 60-31, prompting House committee hearings. The rival Gore bill calls for a five year 18 billion dollar road program funded largely by federal grants and a bond issue, while Republicans seek to shelve it.

The Soviet Union formally accepted an invitation to a Big Four summit parley while accusing the United States of pre conditions likely to doom the talks. Moscow argued Washington seeks to discuss Eastern Europe from a position of strength and rejected dialogue on those nations. Separate notes to Britain and France urged support for Soviet views against the United States.

CHICAGO The National Safety Council estimates the Memorial Day weekend death toll from traffic accidents may reach 360. About 40 million motor vehicles are expected on U S highways during the holiday period from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday, compared with 362 deaths last year and a 363 three-day record in 1953.

Tornado Toll Rises Across Kansas and Oklahoma Towns

Overnight tornadoes killed dozens and injured hundreds across Udall and Oxford in Kansas and Blackwell and Sweetwater in Oklahoma. Dozens of homes and factories were leveled in a 36 square mile area near Blackwell, with San Angelo Texas reporting nine dead from a bomber crash tied to the storm.

Oklahoma town hit by tornado kills at least nineteen

A tornado devastated Blackwell with two dead and extensive injuries. Ambulances, doctors, nurses and rescue crews from surrounding towns aided as hospitals filled. Temporary morgue set up, National Guard patrolled, churches housed victims, and out of town officers and civil defense teams joined the relief effort. Fast winds earlier unroofed warehouses and uprooted trees in the same area.
