President Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev meet at a Moscow dacha for five hours as talks focus on broad European and Asian issues. Trade questions remain for later action with possible U.S. grain sales to the Soviet Union.
Five women were killed and others injured in a sequence of explosions at Ingram Industries near Kiln Mississippi. Firefighters and defense officials battled fires as star shells flares and lead styphnate drums threatened further blasts and evacuations continued through the night.
North Vietnamese forces penetrated Kontum City, briefly seizing buildings and threatening the air field before government troops recaptured key areas by noon. The offensive extended toward Hue and Da Nang as An Loc and Quang Tri faced ongoing pressure in a ninth week of fighting. John Hogue, plant safety supervisor, said five women mixing chemicals in a small building creating star flares were killed in the explosion. Mildred Carroll, 43, reported hearing the blast and seeing flares blown into other areas amid a rising black smoke and a mushroom cloud.
Washington AP The Commerce Department reports its leading indicators composite index up 1.4 percent in April. March’s uprating to 19 percent marks the sharpest monthly gain in a year, with only one indicator turning adverse as price and labor costs eased slightly.

A Brookings Institution report warns the government must cut existing programs or raise taxes for any new high priority initiatives. It forecasts the national debt rising to about 20 billion annually by 1975, with revenues failing to cover new outlays. It favors higher income taxes or a value added tax as primary new revenue sources and projects an $11 billion defense budget increase over four years.
The forecast calls for a clear night with a low in the mid teens. Sunny and warm conditions are expected Friday with high temperatures in the 80s.
Terrorists struck the U S Army Europe headquarters in Heidelberg killing three American soldiers and wounding five as West German authorities, led by Interior Minister Hans Genscher, hunted the Baader Meinhoff group. The attack followed earlier bombings in Frankfurt Augsburg Munich and Paris.
