Mrs. Marcel Dassault, wife of a Paris aircraft magnate, was released after 35 hours in captivity as three men described as gangsters were detained. A fourth suspect, Dominique, fled during a farmstead search led by gendarmes north of Paris.
Peking radio quotes a People's Daily editorial calling U.S. plans for UN patrols on the South Vietnam Cambodia frontier an expansion of American aggression. The broadcast accuses Stevenson proposals of drawing the United Nations into Indochina and opposes Geneva neutrality efforts for Cambodia.
Neutralist Premier Souvanna Phouma urged joining a proposed 14 nation conference on the Laotian crisis only if a cease fire is immediate and the Pathet Lao retreat to their Plaine des Jarres positions. He warned the Laos situation is critical and must be solved within the Geneva accords.
Police say 31 year old Robert Henry Nicolaus admitted shooting his three children to death claiming they would be better off in heaven. He told deputies he felt a duty. Bodies found in the trunk of his car in North Sacramento.

The Supreme Court ruled Prince Edward County Virginia must reopen its public schools on a desegregated basis by September. The county closed schools in 1959 to avoid admitting Black students, part of a long desegregation fight dating to 1951 and tied to the 1954 Brown v. Board era. Justice Black led the decision with Justices Clark and Harlan concurring on the logic, allowing federal court oversight to ensure fair education.
